The recorded legacy of violin virtuoso Ginette Neveu (1919-1949) has been preserved by various record labels, not the least of which have been Tahra and Opus Kura. Neveu’s premature death in a plane crash October 27, 1949, in the Azores deprived us all of her immense talent, as well as her two legendary instruments, a Stradivarius and a Guadagnini, along with the sad loss of her equally gifted brother, Jean, an outstanding pianist. Capable of a fierce, interpretive passion, Neveu projected a firmly elastic musical line, girded by an idiosyncratic vibrato and rhythmic acuity, making the evolving patina appear unbroken and hewn in a single gesture. Even in her (relative) youth, as in the Sonata by Richard Strauss, we feel the application of tone color and dramatic continuity has been well ingrained by her devoted studies with Georges Enescu, Jules Boucherit, Nadia Boulanger, and Carl Flesch.
