Frederick Stock (1871-1942) receives from restoration editor and producer Mark Obert-Thorn a comprehensive, chronological survey of the recordings made in Chicago, the first by a credited American orchestra under its official music director. Stock remained at the helm of the Chicago Symphony from 1905-1942, a tenure exceeded only by Eugene Ormandy in Philadelphia, Willem Mengelberg in Amsterdam, and Evgeny Mravinsky in Leningrad. Disc 1 of this present set gives us the Columbia acoustical records, 21 selections; Disc 2 offers the electrical RCA records, of which there are 18 selections. Typically, Obert-Thorn has lavished particular care to preserve the sound quality of both the acoustic and electrical recordings, the former, as he notes, not suffering the re-scoring of the music to re-inforce the bass line and “enhance” the sonic image before the acoustic horn.
